Due to David’s position of King and head of the army, people expected him to revel in death and slaughter. 2 Samuel 4.1-12 Reference: v. 10 … when a man told me, ‘Saul is dead,’ and thought he was bringing good news, I seized him and put him to death in Ziklag. That was the reward I gave him for his news!
David still spoke fondly of Saul after he died, even though he let him down during his life. 2 Samuel 1.17-27 Reference: v. 23 “Saul and Jonathan – in life they were loved and gracious, and in death they were not parted. They were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.”
Through Saul’s death David was to gain everything, but he had to lose so much to get it. 2 Samuel 1.1-16 Reference: v. 12 They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of the Lord and the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
Saul still had people following him to his very end. What type of leader do we follow? 1 Samuel 31.1-13 Reference: v. 5 When the armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him. |
