The Perfect City

Posted by Linda Bailey in RevelationREAPperfectioncity

What would your perfect city look like?  While I like to have everything accessible to me in the way of shopping, I would also like large natural spaces to walk and explore.

Revelation 21:1-27

Reference:  v.25  On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. (NIV Bible)

Explore:  There are many great cities all over the world.  While they all have shops, businesses and people they are all diverse as they hold their own culture. What would your perfect city look like?  While I like to have everything accessible to me in the way of shopping, I would also like large natural spaces to walk and explore.  I'm a fairly systematic person so I would want everything to have its place and the streets to be clean.  Everyone would have a home and there would be great communal places for people to gather.  There would be parks for people to play sport and public stages to see people perform.  Now, I'm no town planner so I would need plenty of help to create a city, but I think that these ideas could be a good start to a great city.

Application:   In John's vision, written in Revelation, he sees the Holy City.  It begins with describing the structure of the city, with the many jewels adorning the gates and foundations.  But I really like the detail mentioned in the last couple of verses that makes this city different to any other due to the presence of God.  It doesn't need a temple because God is present, it doesn't need the sun or moon for light because the Lamb is its lamp and there is no need to lock everything up as there is no evil and darkness.  It makes my city seem a little insignificant now!  Because we are surrounded by so much that is not good, it's hard to imagine a perfect, Godly city.  But that does not mean that we shouldn't aim to create a Godly place in the city or town we live in.  Our homes will never be perfect, but the more we give glory and honour to God, the more we will be contributing towards God's name being proclaimed here on earth.

Prayer:  May Your Name be praised in our homes and in our streets, Lord.  Amen.

What does your perfect city look like?
