Free Daily Devotional App for the iPad

A few days back I wrote a post Daily Devotional for the iPad and since then I have had a few more days to try different techniquies in reading God's Word everyday. I love the YouVersion Bible app, in HD for the iPad, it makes reading different versions a breeze. You may not be aware that everyday we "contribute" to this app by linking directly to the bible text on the YouVersion site. We also we add a contributor link on that site so if people are browsing the Bible and Linda has written a devotion about that text they can see her link in the list with lots of other contributors.

Daily Devotional for the iPad

Linda was generous enough to buy me an iPad for my birthday recently. This has given me the chance to try reading my Daily Devotions on this device.

I have loved the iPad's large screen and it has made my book reading a breeze. I have downloaded a few books, intelectual of course to make me look smart as I show off my new purchase, and have enjoyedreading them on this device.

I have also tried the Daily Devotional App for iPhone that we built and while it is small, like all made for iPhone apps are it is still very usable. Because of the size of the screen on the iPad just reading the normal web page was also very easy, much better than on the iPhone. I also checked out the Daily Devotions Emails in the Mail Appon the iPad, this was also a great way to read a Daily Devotional on the iPad.

In time we may look at updating the iPhone app, I would be interested though in how you are reading your Daily Devotional on the iPad.

Psalm

I have never written much poetry in my life but I had the opportunity to write a Psalm during a spirituality day in July 2009.
On completion I felt that I had engaged in a deep time of worship
and a meaningful moment of healing.

No words can explain Your wonder, O Lord,
No breath uttered can come close to Your majesty.
Your might is greater than the tallest mountain,
And yet Your thoroughness notices the smallest ant.

Your kingdom holds more power than a city of skyscrapers,
Your reward is more significant than money.
Your doors are open to all who are willing,
Your love is more flavoursome than the greatest of meals.

While we are insufferable and stupid,
You desire to invite us in.
I desire to have my home with You,
My lifetime's work is to show others the way.

Why is it then, O Lord, that the work seems so hard?
Why do obstacles stand in my way?
Why is the journey so tiresome?
What good will come from my re-broken heart?

And so I open my naked self to You again,
With trepidation and fear I become vulnerable to You.
When everything within me wants to cover and protect
You see in my heart what is truly there
And my tears respond to the compassion I feel you offering me.

Acknowledge my wounds, O Lord.
May my sealed scars proclaim Your healing power
And forever be a reminder of my need of You.

18 Footsteps

18 footsteps. That's all it took. Laughter, friendship, support, salvation?
What more is only 18 footsteps away?

When I moved to South Morang 15 months ago I saw the potential for living in an amazing community. We were situated in a new housing development estate and the longest serving resident had only been there for eight years. Thousands of houses had been built and there were still a few hundred on the plans. While we were only renting our townhouse we were dreaming of planting a new congregation in the area, so our future plans were to be here long term.

By the end of the first week I realised that I had not just naturally bumped into any of our neighbours. We were sharing a wall with two neighbours and yet we had not met them face-to-face. I was determined to get to know people however it was not going to be as casual as I had first thought. So, I plucked up all my courage and went door knocking! Let me just state, this is not my usual behaviour. I am generally very friendly to people I meet but I don't like to push myself on anyone. However, I realised that I only had a very short period of time where I could use the 'I've just moved into the area' line. So I went with all the courage I could muster and a friendly smile plastered all over my face.

I met Donna first. She lived next door with her husband and three children. She was incredibly chatty but had only just moved in to the neighbourhood herself. They had sold their house that was closer to the city and had moved further out to find a bigger place. Open and chatty was a good start and so, with my renewed confidence, I moved on to the next house. Dee was only a little younger than me. She and her partner had bought the corner townhouse and were planning to marry at the end of the year. She invited me in and we chatted for quite a while. 'This could be the start of a beautiful friendship,' I thought as I waved her goodbye. The neighbours on our other side were not home so I thought I would retire for the day as two out of three aint bad! Now that I had just met my new future best friend and a lovely motherly neighbour, I was quite content. Little did I know that in the next 12 months I would only see my 'new future best friend' twice and that was as she drove past me in the car!

It took me another week to find our neighbours on the other side at home and introduce myself. Ben and Amanda were a couple, about the same age as my husband and I, and were planning on buying in the area sometime after their wedding which was scheduled at the end of the year. They had not met anyone else in the neighbourhood but were quite friendly.

Well, three neighbours in the first two weeks. That wasn't bad, however soon enough two weeks turned in to two months and I realised I had not had or made the opportunity to meet anyone else. Not just that, but I hadn't even had the opportunity to pump into the neighbours I had already met. This called for drastic measures. So we worked out a date when we were free and decided that we would invite Ben and Amanda over for tea. This was a big step and yet I knew that Cam could make conversation with a wooden post if he needed to and it wasn't far to run home for them if thing [...]

Daily Bible Study - Too hard on a hot day like today?

Linda's blog about Daily Bible Study discusses the necessity of a close walk with God, a Daily Bible Study can of course helps this. How do you do your study when it is as hot and energy draining as it is today in Melbourne. 40 Degrees Centigrade!!

Tell us how you do your daily bible study and do Linda's REAP artciles help? Or Daily emails were popular but unfortunately the service we were using to do this shut down. We are trying to get these working again so they can remind you, prompt you, to do a daily bible study.

Daily Bible Study: Blessing or Burden?

For most people a daily Bible study can be more of a burden than a blessing.

Our lives are filled with so many different pressures that our regular God-time often gets pushed to the back. We know that daily Bible study and prayer is essential for a healthy relationship wtih God, but somehow, no matter how good our intentions are to begin with, we struggle to keep any regular routine.

Why is it so hard to keep up with regular daily Bible study? Do we not think that it's worthwhile? Do we not see any benefit in spending time exploring the stories and wisdom from God's Word?

To be honest, there are days when I commit willingly to my daily Bible study at yet I don't get any epiphany and I finish my devotion feeling none the wiser. But we never know when the epiphany may come. A year ago I moved to a suburb in Melbourne called South Morang. My parents had never heard of this suburb before our plan to move. Now they hear it mentioned all the time. They notice it in the paper, they hear it on the news, and a few of their friends have even driven through there recently. South Morang has not become more pronounced since I have moved there, but because my parents now have a point of reference to that place, they recognise it when it is spoken of.
Our daily Bible study can have the same impact on our lives. When we read a passage in the Bible it may not help us in that moment, but when something connected to those words come up in our everyday life then we find a new connection to God.

Doing a daily Bible study can sometimes feel like a burden but the more we know of God and the more we experience Him, the more our lives are truly blessed.

While looking for Christian Devotions I have been impressed with the quality of some of the writers on YouVersion . Linda uploads a link to her devotions there everyday but some of the other contributers are very good too. We are really blessed by the work that Lifechurch.tv do in this area as well as the many resources they offer all Christians at open.lifechurch.tv too.

Today we celebrate the birth of our Saviour.

While this marvellous event occured over 2000 years ago, we still celebrate the magnitude of God's love and grace for sending His Son to the earth.

May your day be filled with love, acceptance and rejoicing as we are reminded that Jesus came to earth, He lived as an extraordinary example, He died an horrific death but now lives forever with each one of us.

I have really enjoyed delivering this Daily Devotional for over a year now. While it has been online for only one year I have been using this R.E.A.P. process for much longer.

I trust that my readers have got as much out of this devotional as I have put into it. Thank you for all those who have sent emails or left comments, it has been a real encouragement to me and my husband who is the webmaster here.
