Big Words

Posted by Linda Bailey in wordsREAP2 Corinthians

From  ecclesiology to eschatological, justification to sanctification, I constantly had to search through my dictionary each night to understand what was being said.

2 Corinthians 4.1-18

Reference:  v.2b  On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every person's conscience in the sight of God. (NIV Bibl)

Explore:  At theological college we heard and learnt many long difficult words.  Even the word 'theological' was one to get my head around!  From ecclesiology to eschatological, justification to sanctification, I constantly had to search through my dictionary each night to understand what was being said.  However, when it came to Sunday and I would stand before the congregation to preach, I would intentionally leave these big words at the door.  It is not that half the congregation wouldn't already know these words and it is not because I don't see my role as a preacher to be also a teacher.  My reasoning is referred to in this verse from Corinthians: ...setting forth the truth plainly.

Application:  Often we seem to complicate things rather than make them more simple.  If we want to connect with people we need to be able to explain ourselves plainly so everyone can understand.
Paul Colman writes about this in his song 'All You Need'.  He says it very plainly:

Life can get so complicated
You forget what's real you forget what's good
And they tell you you're educated
If you complicate the simple truth

What's it all about?
Let's break it down

All you need is a listening ear
A smiling face
And a shoulder that you can cry on

Let's not make it any more complicated than it already is.  Let your light shine to the nations.

Prayer:   Lord, life does get very complicated.  We live with the truth that you are real, you love us and you will never leave us.  Thank you for this simple assurance. Amen.

What helps you get through the complicated times of life?
